The Raspberry Pi Global Shutter Camera is a special 1.6-megapixel camera designed for the Raspberry Pi, and it can capture fast-moving scenes without the motion-related artifacts typically seen in rolling shutter cameras.
It is ideal for fast-moving photography and computer vision applications where even small amounts of distortion can significantly degrade inference performance.
The Global Shutter Camera features a large pixel size of 3.45μm × 3.45μm, providing high light sensitivity and allowing for short exposure times, as low as 30μs with sufficient illumination, which is advantageous for high-speed photography. It is equipped with a 1.6 MP Sony IMX296 sensor and shares the same C/CS mount lens compatibility and tripod mounting as the Raspberry Pi High-Quality Camera.
In comparison to other global shutter sensors, the IMX296, while having a lower resolution, is suitable for artificial vision applications where high-resolution images are challenging to process in real-time. The lower pixel count of the Global Shutter Camera can work well with appropriate lens magnification, allowing an image to be naturally captured in a way that's conducive to processing by artificial vision models.
The Raspberry Pi Global Shutter Camera includes a C-CS mount adapter, a screwdriver, a 150mm ribbon cable, and a removable plastic back cover for protection. It is compatible with all Raspberry Pi computers that have a full-size CSI camera connector (an adapter cable is needed for use with the Pi Zero).
