These compact 5050 (5mm x 5mm) SMD LEDs offer the most compact way to integrate multiple bright LEDs into a design. Instead of NeoPixels, this matrix utilizes DotStar LEDs, which employ a 2-wire protocol for smoother color blending and high-frequency PWM.
Keep in mind that with 256 LEDs, driving all LEDs at full white can draw more than 15A of current (which we don't recommend as the flexible PCB might not handle such current). It is advised to keep the current draw below 5A.
Similar to NeoPixels, DotStar LEDs are 5050-sized LEDs with a built-in microcontroller inside each LED, allowing you to set the color/brightness of each LED to a 24-bit color value (8 bits for red, green, and blue). Each LED acts like a shift register, reading color data on its input pins and then shifting previous color data to its output pins. You can control an infinite number of LEDs by sending a long data stream. PWM is built into each LED chip, so once you set the color, you can stop communicating with the display, and it will keep PWMing all the LEDs for you.
Please note: Flexible PCBs are not designed for repeated flexing! While this product may work in wearable devices or situations where the matrix is gently bent, there is no warranty or refund offered if you damage the LEDs or traces. This product is intended for advanced users who understand how to use DotStars, are comfortable with high current requirements, and can protect the matrix from harm. Returns, refunds, or exchanges are not available for damaged products. You cannot cut these panels into custom shapes as data/power lines run across the entire body of the PCB.
