We have placed seven small 5050 (5mm x 5mm) smart RGB LEDs in the most elegant form of a NeoPixel board to date. This beautiful round PCB features mounting holes and a chainable design.
To control as many as you want, you only need a microcontroller pin! Each LED is individually addressable since the driver chip is integrated into the LED itself. Each one has a constant current driver of ~18mA, so the color will remain consistent even if the voltage changes, and there is no need for external current-limiting resistors to keep your design slim. Power everything with 5VDC, and you're ready to rock.
The LEDs become 'chainable' by connecting the output of one Jewel to the input of another. They use a unique protocol that requires precise timing, making them suitable for real-time microcontrollers like AVR, Arduino, PIC, mbed, etc. They are not compatible with Linux-based microcomputers or interpreted microcontrollers like Netduino or Basic Stamp. They are designed for manual soldering and may work with AVR cores, and some others may have ported the driver code, so you can explore online for compatibility with other platforms.
The NeoPixel Jewel comes pre-assembled and tested, featuring seven individually addressable RGB LEDs in a single round board.
