Arduino Zumo Robot - v1.2

The Pololu Zumo robot is a tracked robot platform controlled by Arduino, designed to be smaller than 10 cm x 10 cm and compact enough to qualify for Mini Sumo. It features two micro metal gearmotors connected to silicone tracks, a stainless steel bulldozer-style blade, an array of six infrared reflection sensors for line tracking or edge detection, a 3-axis accelerometer/3-axis magnetometer/3-axis gyroscope, and a simple buzzer for basic sounds and music. Just add 4 AA batteries and an Arduino (or compatible controller), and you're ready to go! No soldering or assembly required.

The Zumo robot is a low-profile tracked robot platform intended to be used with an Arduino (or compatible device) as the main controller. It measures less than 10 cm on both sides and weighs about 300 g with an Arduino Uno and batteries (as shipped), making it both small and lightweight enough to qualify for Mini Sumo competitions. It utilizes two 75:1 HP micro metal gearmotors for propulsion, providing ample torque and a maximum speed of about 2 feet per second (60 cm/s), making it more agile than rival robots like Solarbotics Sumovore. The Parallax SumoBot still provides plenty of control. The Zumo robot is equipped with a stainless steel sumo blade, 0.036" thick, mounted on the front to push objects, and an array of reflection sensors mounted along the front edge of the Zumo (behind the sumo blade) to allow the Zumo to detect features on the ground in front, such as lines to follow or edges to avoid.

The Zumo shield is essentially a shield for Arduino Uno or Leonardo and both can be plugged directly into the shield's male header pins, with their faces down.

Please note that this kit is not compatible with Arduino Mega or Due. It can only be used with the original Arduino UNO.

The robot is shipped as shown in the main product image; no assembly or soldering is required. You will need a compatible Arduino (or compatible controller) and four AA batteries, which are not included.

Features

  • Integrated 75:1 HP micro metal gearmotors provide a good mix of speed (up to 2 feet per second), power, and control.
  • Six IR reflection sensors mounted under the Zumo for detecting contrasts in reflection, which can be used for line tracking or detecting edges (e.g., the white outer area of a sumo ring or the edge of a table).
  • Integrated DRV8835 dual motor drivers provide enough current for Zumo's two high-power gearmotors.
  • Piezo buzzer for playing basic sounds and music. The buzzer is controlled by one of Arduino's PWM outputs, so it can generate tones in the background without consuming much processing power.
  • Integrated LSM303DLHC 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis magnetometer to detect impacts. The compass is sensitive to interference from the motors, batteries, PCB, and surroundings, so it is not generally useful for precise navigation. Still, with proper calibration, it can be used as a rough orientation indicator in many environments.
  • Integrated L3GD20H 3-axis gyroscope for tracking turns. This is new in the Zumo shield's v1.2 version; previous versions did not include a gyro. This sensor, along with the LSM303D mentioned above, effectively provides the shield with a built-in MinIMU-9 v3 IMU module and can be used to create an optional attitude and direction reference system (AHRS) for your robot's orientation.
  • An optional user button on pin 12.
  • 7.5 V boost regulator for powering the Zumo from 4 AA batteries.
  • Easy access to Arduino I/O lines, pin 13 user LED, and Arduino reset line through the shield.
  • A prototyping area on the front for connecting additional sensors and other devices.
  • Compatible with Arduino Uno R3 and Arduino Leonardo. It can also be used with older Arduinos with the same form factor, such as Duemilanove.
  • Arduino libraries and sample code make getting started easy.
  • Detailed user manual. .
  • Dimensions: 98 mm / 3.8" x 98 mm / 3.8" x 39 mm / 1.5".
  • Weight: 163g
