Notify me when its in stockJust like 'classic' electret microphones, MEMS microphones can detect and convert sound into voltage, but they don't require a bias resistor or amplifier - it's all in one! The SPW2430 is a small, low-cost MEMS microphone with a frequency range of 100Hz - 10KHz, making it suitable for almost all general audio recording/detection.
This breakout is best used for projects like voice changers, sound sampling, and sound-reactive projects using FFT. We've kept the board small and simple, with just a 3V voltage regulator (the microphone requires 3.3V DC) and filter capacitors added. It does not include an additional op-amp, so the output voltage swings about 0.67VDC bias with about 100mVpp when speaking next to the microphone, good for something that expects 'line level' input without clipping. If there's a lot of high-frequency sound, it may swing up to 1Vpp or more.
Usage is straightforward: connect GND to ground, Vin to 3.3-5VDC. For best performance, use the 'quietest' supply available (on an Arduino, this would be the 3.3V supply). The audio waveform will come out of the DC pin. The output will have a DC bias of 0.67V, so there's some 'headroom' on what you can read. If your audio equipment requires AC-coupled audio, you can grab the signal out of the AC pin, which is serially connected to a 10uF capacitor.
The output pin is not designed to drive speakers or anything other than the smallest in-ear headphones - you'll need an audio amplifier (like our 3.7W stereo amplifier) to get audio out. If you're connecting to a microcontroller pin, you don't need an amplifier or decoupling capacitor - connect the DC pin directly to the microcontroller ADC pin.
