This is the best battery-backed real-time clock (RTC) you can get that's Raspberry Pi compatible and has native kernel support. The DS3231 data sheet explains that this part is an "Extremely Accurate I²C-Integrated RTC/TCXO/Crystal," and it does exactly what it says on the tin! This Real-Time Clock (RTC) is the most accurate clock you can get in a small, low-power package.

Most RTCs use an external 32kHz timing crystal to keep time with low current draw. And all is well and good, but these crystals have a slight drift, especially when the temperature changes (the temperature affects the frequency of the crystal slightly, but it adds up!) The chip has an integrated temperature sensor right next to the crystal. This sensor compensates for frequency changes by adding or subtracting clock ticks to keep the timekeeping on track!

Many "cheap" DS3231 RTC boards do not use original Maxim DS3231 chips - you get an uncalibrated RTC that does not maintain the stated timekeeping quality! We source these DS3231 chips directly from Maxim, so we know they are 100% genuine.

It works perfectly with any Raspberry Pi (or similar single-board Linux computer) including Pi 1, Pi 2, Pi 3, Pi 4, Pi Zero, A+, B+, etc.
