You only need to connect its gold-plated contacts to any USB port and plug the JST plug at the other end into a 3.7V/4.2V lithium-polymer or lithium-ion rechargeable battery. It comes with two LEDs - one red and one green. The red LED lights up during charging. When the battery is fully charged and ready to use, the green LED lights up.
The charging process takes place in three stages: first, there's the preconditioning charge, then the constant current fast charge, and finally, the constant voltage slow charge to keep the battery full. The default charging current is 100mA, so it will work with batteries of all sizes and USB ports. If you prefer, you can easily switch to 500mA mode by soldering the jumper on the back when you only want to charge 500mAh or larger batteries.
Please note that the Adafruit Micro Lipo - USB LiIon/LiPoly Charger - v1 is intended for use with Adafruit LiPoly/LiIon batteries only and may not be compatible with other batteries.
