micro:bit Power Board

This small board features a standard DC barrel jack socket at one end, and it provides a regulated 3.3V output that you can use to power your micro:bit using the JST battery connector attached to the wires coming from the other end of the board.

If you want to use AC:DC adapters, solar panels, or other power sources that provide voltages between 4.5V and 12V DC, you may want to use a micro:bit Power Board for your micro:bit. The micro:bit Power Board accepts input voltages ranging from 4.5V to 12V DC through its standard DC barrel jack socket and efficiently converts it to a regulated 3.3V output for your micro:bit.

There are a couple of advantages to using a micro:bit Power Board instead of a USB 5V power source. Firstly, some USB 5V adapters can cause issues with the micro:bit. Secondly, by connecting the micro:bit power connector directly to the micro:bit's 3V crocodile clip connector, you can supply much more current to the micro:bit than the allowed 90mA. In fact, you can provide up to 700mA. This makes it great for use with Neopixel strips or servo motors that require a bit more current.

If you're tired of constantly changing batteries to keep your micro:bit project running for an extended period, you can use an AC adapter (not included, but 6V is recommended) to power your micro:bit indefinitely.

When powered from a USB source, your micro:bit can provide a maximum of 90mA of current through its 3V connector. This means it may not be able to drive Neopixel LED displays or servo motors that require more current, and it may not do so reliably. The micro:bit Power Board boosts this maximum output current to a much more respectable 700mA. It's sufficient to power many more Neopixels (depends on full LED brightness) effectively.

While a standard AAA battery pack works well, it only allows for a few days of continuous use for your micro:bit. By using the micro:bit Power Board with a larger battery pack featuring a DC barrel jack, you can achieve a significantly longer battery life. For example, using 4 x AA batteries will provide roughly four times the expected battery life compared to a AAA battery pack.
