With the micro:bit Proto Board, you can create prototype circuits using surface mount and/or traditional components. The design features a twin-grid system that allows circuits to be a mix of surface mount and through-hole components, enabling robust prototyping through soldering. You won't have to reconnect the jumper wires every time you need to move your project.

The plated through holes are on a 2.54mm (0.1) pitch, and the surface mount pads are on a 1.27mm (0.05) pitch. These grid sizes are designed to accommodate most common components. The surface mount pads are also designed to be soldered together, allowing for custom-sized parts. Additionally, all micro:bit pins are broken out and can be used to connect to the prototyping area.

There is a dedicated area for attaching the provided terminal block. Here, you'll find four positive pads and four negative pads that can be easily connected to the prototyping area. The board also includes expansion pads that conform to the Link Standard, allowing it to be used with other Link-compatible expansion boards.

To create a common ground in your projects, you'll need to make a connection between one of the four (-) negative pads next to the Terminal Block area and the micro:bit GND breakout pad. This can be done by soldering a wire between the two.

The board is compatible with a variety of different component types, including but not limited to: 0805, 0603, SOT223, SMC, SOD323, SO8, SOT23, and standard through-hole components.
