What is Raspberry Pi 5?

The Raspberry Pi 5, powered by a 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4 GHz, delivers a 2-3x increase in CPU performance compared to the Raspberry Pi 4! In addition to the performance boost, the Raspberry Pi 5 comes with a host of exciting new features and enhancements, making it the most advanced Raspberry Pi yet.

Welcome to the latest generation of Raspberry Pi: the all-in-one computer.

What's New in Raspberry Pi 5

2-3x CPU Performance Increase

At the core of the Raspberry Pi 5 is the new 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor. Running at 2.4 GHz, it features cryptographic extensions, 512 KB of L2 cache per core, and 2 MB of shared L3 cache. The Broadcom BCM2712 SoC provides 2-3x performance improvement over its predecessor.

Improved Graphics with Dual 4Kp60 Outputs

The 800 MHz VideoCore VII GPU, connected to the BCM2712 via PCI Express, significantly enhances graphics performance. This upgrade supports dual 4Kp60 display output via micro-HDMI, ensuring a seamless desktop experience while browsing or streaming.

Advanced I/O Capabilities

For the first time, a Raspberry Pi integrates its own in-house silicon for a full-size computer.

  • RP1 Southbridge: Handles a large portion of I/O capabilities, improving peripheral performance and functionality.
  • USB Bandwidth: Over twice the total USB bandwidth, enabling faster transfers for UAS drives and other high-speed peripherals.
  • MicroSD Performance: Doubled with support for SDR104 high-speed mode.
  • PCI Express 2.0 Interface: Supports high-bandwidth peripherals through a single-lane PCIe interface.

Dual Camera/Display Ports

The RP1 features dual four-lane 1.5 Gbps MIPI transceivers, tripling total bandwidth and supporting up to two cameras or displays in any combination. Enhanced image signal processing opens new opportunities for commercial and industrial applications.

Other Notable Additions

  • Power Button: A long-awaited dedicated power button for convenience.
  • Real-Time Clock (RTC): Built-in RTC retains time/date information with a backup battery (sold separately).
  • Dedicated Fan Header: Allows for easy connection of cooling fans without interfering with GPIO devices.
  • Dedicated UART Header: Enables debugging and boot diagnostics without using GPIO pins.

Additional Improvements

  • Mounting holes for heatsinks and coolers.
  • Unique board ID for better tracking.
  • Enhanced PCB protection with metal backing.
  • Relocated PoE header and removal of audio input.
  • Flush GPIO pins for better integration.
