75mm Bars - 12V Digital RGB LED Pixels (21 Arrays) - WS2801

Each plastic PVC 'pixel bar' contains 3 RGB LEDs and a control chip soldered onto a PCB. The pixels are then 'sealed' with epoxy to make them waterproof. These are fairly large pixels, but they have two plastic flanges with 0.15"/4mm diameter holes at the ends and various mounting options like adhesive foam tape on the back for easy attachment. They are often used for outdoor signs. Compared to our other LED dots, these are much larger and much brighter, suitable for larger-scale installations. They also make great large RGB 7-segment displays, so we use them in strips of 21 instead of 20.

The pixels are connected with a 4-conductor cable: +12VDC, ground, data, and clock. Data is shifted from one pixel to the next, so you can easily cut the wire or attach more to the end.

Each pixel is digitally controlled with an internal 8-bit PWM LED driver (24-bit color for 16 million different colors). The pixels need to be clocked by a microcontroller, and we have sample code linked below that works on an Arduino, making it easy to adapt to any other microcontroller.

The pixels use 3 x 5050 RGB LEDs with a 120-degree beam width. All the LEDs are controlled simultaneously, so you can't have one pixel with different colors for each of the three LEDs (color control is within a single 3-LED pixel). The total maximum brightness of all LEDs is approximately 4000mcd. (Please note: LED mcd ratings are often inflated by most LED sellers, so be extra skeptical when reviewing LED ratings!)

Sold by the strip, each strip has 21 pixels in a row! There are two JST SM 3-pin connectors on each end of the wire, so you can daisy-chain as many wires together as you'd like.

Specifications

  • 78mm x 18mm (3.1" x 0.7") bars
  • 4mm/0.15" mounting holes spaced 86mm/3.4" apart
  • 75mm / 3" apart on wires 21 pixels per strip
  • These pixels use a WS2801 chip for full 24-bit color, constant-current drive
  • 12VDC power, maximum 60mA per pixel (for full white LEDs)
  • 2-pin SPI-like protocol Brightness per pixel: 4000 mcd combined (we'll try to get a data sheet for the LEDs)
